Reiki Definition

Reiki is a hands-on healing technique that originated in Tibet. It was later re-discovered by a Japanese monk, Mikao Usui in the late 19th century. Dr. Usui was dedicated to healing and was eventually (through his students) responsible for the spread of Reiki throughout Japan, Europe, and North America. Reiki is an accessible and effective way to tap into the universal energy for healing of oneself and others.

The meaning of the Japanese word Reiki lies in it’s two syllables: “Rei” means universal and “ki” refers to the vital energy or conscious that is named “Chi” in Chinese traditions and “Prana” in yogic traditions.

Reiki practitioners such as I believe that this universal life energy flows through all living beings and that disruptions or imbalances in this energy can lead to illness or stress.

During a Reiki session, a practitioner channels this energy through their hands,  by lightly touching the recipient’s body.  The intention is to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and facilitate healing on physical, emotional, and spiritual levels.  Reiki is often described as a gentle and non-invasive practice, and it is commonly used as a complementary therapy alongside conventional medical treatments.

Overall, Reiki is a popular and widely practiced form of alternative therapy, valued by many for its holistic approach to healing and well-being.

Principles of Reiki

Reiki is based on several key principles, including the belief in a universal life force energy that flows through all living beings.  Practitioners believe that this energy can be harnessed and directed for healing purposes.  The five Reiki principles, as taught by Usui, are:

  • Just for today, I will not be angry,
  • Just for today, I will not worry.
  • Just for today, I will be grateful.
  • Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
  • Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.

How Does a Reiki Treatment Work?

Reiki is a hands-on healing technique. The person being treated is fully clothed and there is no manipulation of body tissues. Healing energy is transmitted through the hands of the Reiki therapist. The therapist places her hands on key energetic points on the body to bring the client’s energy to overall balance and promote healing. Special attention may be directed to certain areas of the body in the case of illness or injury.

At Golden Devi, I offer two levels of treatment:

  • a 45-minute whole body treatment and
  • a one-hour treatment that includes a focused treatment for a particular area of the body or to address some other physical/mental issue.

Some of the benefits of Reiki treatments can include:

  • stress reduction
  • relaxation
  • pain relief
  • improved emotional well-being, and
  • enhanced spiritual connection.

Most clients who have Reiki treatments at Golden Devi have reported positive experiences.

Reiki Training at Golden Devi with Melanie Rowan Bonnell

Introduction to Reiki and Reiki Self-Treatment.

In this module, students will be introduced to a brief history of Reiki and the philosophy and approach of this lineage of Reiki tracing directly back to Dr. Usui. They will be trained and have an opportunity to practice the valuable tool of Reiki self-treatment. This module is offered as a half-day in person workshop and virtually as a three one-hour class series over Zoom.

Reiki 1

In Reiki 1, students are introduced to the first of the Reiki power symbols which begins to open the flow of healing power through the physical and energy body. Students will learn the basic technique of treating other people and have an opportunity to practice on other students. An important aspect of this level is gaining the understanding that the Reiki practitioner is a channel or vehicle for the healing energy of the universe and that healing does not come from their own personal power. At the completion of this module, I will give the Reiki 1 “attunement” which heightens the practitioner’s ability to channel healing energy. A Reik 1 certificate will be provided as a record of the training. Reiki 1 is offered as a one-and-a-half-day workshop. A Zoom version of this training is planned for late 2024.

Reiki 2

In Reiki 2, students are introduced to three more Reiki power symbols, including the distance healing symbol. Students will study the significance and use of the symbols in hands on healing and other situations. Distance healing and its many applications will be a focus of this module. At the completion of this module, I will give the Reiki 2 attunement and a certificate will be awarded. Reiki 2 is offered as a two-day workshop.

Reiki Master

Reiki Master training and attunement is offered only after a practitioner has had a number of years of experience in practicing and offering Reiki healing. A prerequisite is the presentation of a Reiki 1 and a Reiki 2 certificate from a recognized Reiki lineage and Reiki Master.

For the most part this training is offered on an individual basis. The length of training will vary based on the knowledge and experience of the practitioner.
